RIGHT DOWN TO THE CORE

What this Core actually is, is not a question asked by the art exhibition presenting works by Heikedine Günther. Although this ominous Core which pops up in the title of each painting creates curiosity, it eludes a definition and only an approximation is possible.
The common denominator in all works might be a self-contained figure which floats in an uncertain space. Sometimes not alone but with a friend to which they seek a connection. Maybe the beholders also feel a bond to the imperfect shapes and find a little bit of themselves in these silhouettes. In order to strengthen this connection, one gets closer and looks deeper – in the truest sense of the word. The surface of the painting reveals itself as built up of many layers of oil paint, always starting with a gold primer. A special craquelure technique, lend from the Old Masters, exposes what lies dormant underneath allowing the colors to shine through. This raises the important question of what is hidden from the eye but still contributes to what is visible. It is the many layers of paint which create the strong, radiant and yet fragile bodies. RIGHT DOWN TO THE CORE is an expedition through the many layers of Heikedine Günther’s Core Paintings bringing their beholders closer to the idea of the Core.
